Yaozu L. (2022 recipient, Rev. Dr. James Shum scholarship)

2023 update from Yaozu L.: The UC Berkeley School of Engineering has been both hard and interesting. In the first semester, I took an Ethnic Studies English class, multivariable calculus, bioengineering course, and psychology. The English class was a ton of reading and writing. The multivariable calculus class made me question my ability to do math, despite math being my best subject. Bioengineering was full of hard physics. Psychology was fun. Every day was deadline after deadline. Sometimes I wished I had more hours in a day to complete my tasks. It was stressful but fun. I learned interesting things, but it was just a lot.

I am glad that academics was the main thing that I had to stress about though. Thanks to the "Thirst for Knowledge" scholarship, I was able to buy books and pay off parts of my tuition, so I did not have to stress so much about the financial part of college. I am very thankful that the scholarship allowed me to fully focus on school to achieve my academic goal.

Reyna H. (2021 recipient, Lincoln Square)

First Biology class, first A, and first dorm room have all been checked off my list of firsts at UCLA! I just finished fall quarter of my freshman year and am beyond grateful for the generosity and support of the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship allowed me to purchase course materials, get involved with two amazing communities: the triathlon team and Asian American Christian Fellowship, and ultimately thrive at UCLA without a heavy financial burden. It has been a blessing to learn from incredible professors, meet intelligent and driven students, and continue to work towards my goal of working in healthcare. Now that classes, clubs, and other activities are returning in person, I look forward to getting involved in the greater LA community and serving those around me.

2023 update from Reyna H: My sophomore year at UCLA has been incredible! This past summer I had the opportunity to travel to Japan and gain a novel perspective on dementia with Japan America Innovators of Medicine, a bio-design program aiming to revolutionize the future of dementia care. At the beginning of the year, I picked up the Disabilities Studies minor and started working as a personal care assistant. I have also gotten more involved at a local church where I have been able to serve members and the broader LA community. Being on the triathlon team has also been a fun way to challenge me physically and explore different parts of LA! I’ve been blessed to come across some amazing friends who have helped me grow academically, spiritually, and athletically and am excited to see where God leads me next.

In the midst of such unprecedented times, I have completed my first two quarters at Stanford University! I spent my freshman year exploring a multitude of courses, including product design, education, and communications. (There are just so many classes to choose from!) I have also been involved with different organizations at Stanford, such as Freshman Student Council, Asian American Activities Center, and Stanford Women in Business. Through these opportunities, I have been able to further my passions for advocacy, empowerment, and community service.

Ultimately, I want to thank the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship for their ongoing support throughout my educational journey. The scholarship has helped lessen the financial burden on my family, as I was able to use it to pay for books, supplies, and course fees. I am eternally grateful for the generosity of the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship, and I am incredibly excited to continue giving back to my communities!

2022 Update from Emily L.: I'm into my sophomore year at Stanford, and I finally had the opportunity to experience all the goodness that comes with the on-campus life! Through late-night study sessions, discussion sections, and clubs, I've met so many wonderful people, all of whom are so hardworking, knowledgeable, and humble. I've also spent a lot of time exploring the opportunities at Stanford and finding my own communities. I'm part of the First-Gen, Low-Income Leland Scholars Program, Stanford's Asian American Student Association, and Cap & Gown (a club that aims to empower women on campus). Through these opportunities, I have been able to further my passions for advocacy, empowerment, and community service. Furthermore, my anticipated major in Science, Technology and Society allows me to deeply investigate the roles Science and Technology play to foster a just society. I'm excited to further these insights and carry them into my future professional endeavors.

I am currently on my second semester at UC Berkeley, preparing to declare for my intended major of Public Health in the fall. It has been a hard but rewarding school year as everything went virtual and I have been experiencing Zoom fatigue. Thanks to the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship, I have been able to pay off the remainder of my tuition and focus on my studies. I have been able to intern with the Bay Area Community Resources to pass the first health ordinance law in the nation for the city of Berkeley, along with joining the CAL Undergraduate Public Health Coalition as a committee member. Working with my friend's marketing business, Blue Arris, we were able to provide pro bono photography and marketing services for the small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic. I am excited to be on campus this fall, as I will thrive in a pillar of utmost learning, strong friendships, and the opportunities to give back to my Oakland community.

2023 update from Kelly L: As a junior, I am finally taking the core classes for my public health major. I have strong interests in community health, academia, and research. I will be spending my upcoming summer conducting quantitative research on maternal health in Bellingham, WA, and Rwanda. This opportunity is very important to me as I have always wanted to do public work outside of the United States. So far, I am involved in coordinating the mentorship program for the Biology Scholars Program, along with being an RA again. This year has been full of challenges, growth, and mental peace; I am excited for what 2023 has in store for me.

2022 update from Kelly L.: Starting my sophomore year at Cal, I started living at the dorms as a Resident Assistant for 700+ undergraduate students in a co-ed residential environment. With this role, I organize and coordinate educational community programs along with operating as a first-person responder for physical and psychological incidents. Being on campus definitely changed my experience last semester, as I was able to meet new friends, study at many libraries, and take interesting classes like Emotional Health. For the summer, I have been applying to multiple public health internships and have interviewed with one so far. Fingers crossed that I get into my top choice.

Xingzhen M. (2019 recipient, Chinese Presbyterian Church of Oakland)

I am currently in the second semester of my freshmen year at Laney College. I am double majoring in Business Administration and Economics. At one point, I felt lost about which college I should attend. However, I ended up at Laney College which I am blessed about because I meet a lot of friendly classmates who are able to help ease my college anxiety, and I'm able to alleviate my family's financial burden a lot compared to attending a four year university. Although community college tuition and textbooks are cheaper than UCs, CSUs, and Privates, it is still relatively expensive. The Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship definitely has helped me pay for some of my college textbooks. I am really grateful for this scholarship. I am looking forward to continue my studies and transferring to a UC really soon.

2023 Update from Xingzhen "Jenny" M.:
Time really flies by quickly, and it's hard to believe that I have already spent two years at Cal. Looking back, I feel that not joining student clubs and organizations was a missed opportunity due to safety concerns around nighttime activities in Berkeley. Nonetheless, I have completed my final course for my sociology major and am on track to graduate. However, I am interested in pursuing a double major in data science, so I will probably be graduating as a super senior in the fall of 2023. As for summer plans, I haven't made any concrete decisions yet, but I am considering enrolling in a few courses. Regardless, I am grateful for the Darlene Lee Scholarship, which has been instrumental in supporting my educational journey so far.

2022 Update from Xingzhen "Jenny" M.:
Since my second semester of junior year at Cal, I started living at an off-campus apartment in Berkeley. I am officially declared as a sociology major. However, I am planning to get my prerequisite in for data science, so I can hopefully double major in data science by the end of fall semester of senior year. For the summer, I will be interning at Bank of America's Merill Lynch Wealth Management as an analyst. Despite still struggling to find a social circle on campus, I have been able to try a lot of different food places in Berkeley. Go Bears!

2021 Update from Xingzhen "Jenny" M.: During the past year, I became involved as a treasurer for the Associated Students of Laney College. My primary responsibility was to allocate funds to sponsor healing workshops for students amidst all the chaos that has been happening in the nation lately. This is my last semester at Laney College, as I will be graduating with an Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Social Science, and Language Arts in May 2021. After that, I will be transferring to UC Berkeley this upcoming fall as an Economics major, but I am thinking about also double majoring in Data Science. I can’t wait for what is ahead!

Vivian W. (2019 recipient, Lincoln Square)

I have just completed my first semester of college at the University of Southern California. Time flew by! It seems like yesterday when I was still applying to colleges, hoping to get into my dream schools. I am eternally grateful for the community that supports me from the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship. I’ve been able to focus on my studies without carrying a financial burden. I recognize it’s a privilege to do that, so I want to thank the Scholarship once again. I’ve had opportunities to listen to guest speakers, attend campus events, absorb valuable information from profound professors, meet incredible people, and explore the city of Los Angeles. I’ve been able to purchase books and supplies that assist my education journey with the Scholarship. I am doing my best in balancing my academic and social life. I’ve continued to do community service whenever I can by participating in "Friends and Neighbors Day", which connects me with a local nonprofit to serve the underprivileged. On the USC campus, I do my best to inform my community by being involved with the student newspaper Daily Trojan as an assistant news editor, reporting on latest events impacting the Trojan family. I cannot wait to expand my networks and reach out to more of my new community in Los Angeles. A huge thank-you to the Darlene Lee Community Service Scholarship for giving me the opportunity to pursue higher education with less financial burden.

2022 update from Vivian W.: It feels wonderful to return to campus for in-person classes after several semesters of online courses. I have taken advantage of opportunities whenever I can so I can get somewhat of a normal college experience. I continue to prioritize my academics, and I’ve made time to get involved in student organizations. In the beginning of my junior year, I officially declared a marketing minor, so I’ve been taking courses in our business school. I’m happy with this minor because I get to connect what I learn in my marketing courses with what I learn in my communications courses. I believe the two topics work well together. Outside of the classroom, I’ve continued to remain in leadership positions as Marketing Director for USC OWN IT which plans an annual summit to connect students with women and non-binary leaders in various industries and Co-Vice President of Finance for The Women’s Network which offers a networking environment for women. Through these two organizations, I’ve been able to find a strong community that shares similar values and passions. In my free time, I’ve tried to visit different parts of Los Angeles with my friends and absorb the good memories. I am grateful for these experiences and am proud of myself for grasping opportunities to create a better version of myself each and every day.

2021 UPDATE from Vivian W.: Since last March, I've returned home to the Bay Area for my classes due to the pandemic. All my classes are remote, so I listen to lectures and participate in discussions through my screen. I've been kept busy with my extracurricular activities. For example, I'm Co-VP of Finance for The Women's Network at USC, and my main responsibilities include hosting finance literacy workshops and creating fundraisers for various organizations. I'm also Assistant Director of Marketing at USC OWN IT, so I manage our social media and create marketing plans for the organization. I'm glad to be spending more time with my family, and I look forward to being on campus hopefully soon.

Kayla L. (2017 recipient, Lincoln Square)

I have completed my first year at Occidental as a freshman. I chose to attend Occidental because I wanted to attend a small liberal arts school with stellar academics and that had a Division 3 athletic program.  I am a runner so Oxy’s track and field program was a major selling point with me. The track program felt right from the coaches, teammates, and track facilities. My first year has been consumed with academics, cross country practices, and getting oriented to my college life. In addition to all the running and academic workload, I have found time to be part of Boundless Brilliance as we teach science to elementary students each week. Presenting science to elementary school students is the best way to give back to the local community and inspire young girls about the STEM field. Science, running, and the engagement of a small school are all what I hope for at Occidental.
I would like to thank the Darlene Lee Scholarship that helped to pay some of the cost of my first year at Oxy. I am very grateful for this generosity.

Yan Ting L. (2017 recipient, Chinese Presbyterian Church of Oakland)

The Darlene Lee scholarship has helped lessen my financial burdens because I am financially dependent on my parents. It also gave me the courage to join a program that allows me to get involved in research and to make the decision to study abroad in the fall. I am currently in the Chemistry Peer Mentoring Program, which is a program designed for first-year undergraduate and transfer chemistry students with a specific aim at first generation and under-represented minorities. I plan to share my study abroad experience with them after fall quarter and to encourage them to study abroad so that they can experience a new learning environment in a different country.

2019 UPDATE from Yan Ting: During my study abroad experience, I was able to explore Nottingham and travel to London. I also took a culture class where I saw the apple tree in Isaac Newton's home. I am currently getting used to taking the bus to campus since I am living in an apartment. My current major is chemistry, but I am considering other options, such as taking a course called "Introduction to Forensic Science", so I may end up with an emphasis in forensic chemistry.

I'm very thankful for Darlene A. Lee's scholarship for supporting me through one of my most difficult years in college. I felt lost and hesitant about my major. I had to restart to explore in search for a suitable major for myself. Darlene Lee's scholarship provided me enough money to pay for my classes and books. It was a great gift for me from God. With Darlene Lee's scholarship, I was able to get through this hardship. I want to thank you and God for this gift with all my heart, Mrs. Darlene Lee and the scholarship committee.

2019 UPDATE from Jenny: Thanks to the Darlene Lee scholarship, along with other scholarships, I can cover my rent and college tuition without needing to pay out of pocket. I transferred to UC Davis this year and am doing great!

I am currently attending UC Berkeley and trying to explore and participate in the opportunities that is offered to me such as the interesting Decal classes, clubs, and study abroad programs. Most of these opportunities have a cost, and I would definitely say that the scholarship allows me to make the best out of my college experience. Having to worry less about affording these activities, I was able to study abroad in London for an entire semester, learn how to solve a Rubik's Cube, and join a Service Fraternity to continue serving the community! College has been been an interesting journey, and I want to thank the Darlene A. Lee Scholarship for contributing to it!

The Darlene A. Lee Scholarship has helped me tremendously with covering textbooks and other service fees that comes with college tuition. Currently, at UCLA, I am working hard to focus and excel in my studies and the scholarship has allowed me to do that. Besides school, I continue to volunteer at the local health clinics for at-risk HIV/AIDS communities. I am grateful for the scholarship and am continuing the mission of Darlene to help the community and paying it forward.

The Darlene Lee Scholarship has blessed me so much at UC Santa Cruz. It has allowed me to stay focused on my education despite the many expenses needed to attend college. It has given me the chance to become a computer programmer, and I hope that someday I may be able to benefit my community through computer programming.

2018 UPDATE from Donald H.:
I am now a second year student at UC Santa Cruz. My time here has been an amazing experience so far. I am so thankful for having been a recipient of the Darlene Lee scholarship as it has helped me to have a good education. At this current time I am still studying toward a computer science degree while working part time at one of the dining commons in Santa Cruz. My experience at the school has been wonderful as I have been able to join a fellowship known as Asian American Christian Fellowship (AACF) and have been serving in it through worship and helping to serve my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ through God's love.

Being able to attend such an interactive university here at Cal Poly SLO with the ability to adapt the motto "Learn By Doing" positively molded me into becoming a more well-rounded person. I was able to be very involved with different aspects of college, like various clubs and organizations, but especially Greek Life (Alpha Gamma Delta). The Darlene A Lee Scholarship allowed me to begin my journey in philanthropy, service, and lifelong sisterhood.

2019 UPDATE from Emily C.: I have become more involved with my Asian community here in SLO. I am now in an Asian interest sorority named Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, and we strive to follow our five pillars of Asian: awareness, philanthropy, sisterhood, leadership, and scholarship. I'm in my last year of college and can't wait to graduate this fall. After graduation, I will be taking a few months off to study for the MCAT, as I plan to attend medical school.

2018 UPDATE from Emily C.: The Darlene A. Lee Scholarship, with its acknowledgement of service by young community members just like myself, allowed me to continue to persevere with my dedication towards service and giving back to the community in college.I am affiliated with a greek organization (Alpha Gamma Delta) that focuses on diabetes research, and we often hold philanthropy events to raise money to donate to diabetes foundations! My sisters and I volunteer to help organize these events.

I am currently a freshman in Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University. Over this past year, I have realized the many hidden costs involved with living outside of home. These costs include basics, such as drinking water, to medical fees after breaking my wrist falling off my bed. The Darlene A. Lee Scholarship, has graciously helped with these expenses and best exemplifies the closeness and generosity of the Asian American community. Geaux Tigers!

UPDATE from Jonathan W.: I am a sophomore at Louisiana State University majoring in Petroleum Engineering and my time here has helped me open my eyes to new perspectives and to learn more about myself. Higher education is an opportunity that should not be wasted and the Darlene Lee scholarship can soften the blow of tuition.

I've enjoyed new experiences of meeting new people and learning more about myself each and every day all thanks to this opportunity offered by the Darlene Lee scholarship.

2019 UPDATE from Darren H.: I’m going to graduate during June this year. My internship experience was excellent last year as I obtained more real world skills that I will definitely find valuable for my future job. I have not been volunteering in college; however, this scholarship has, without a doubt, assisted me by giving me the opportunity to learn and prepare myself with the real world.

Vicky H (2014 recipient, Lincoln Square)

The Darlene Lee scholarship gives anyone a chance to have a little push start for college. The money went by fast with expenses, but it's the experience that touched my heart. I took on a job my first year because I needed money, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone to follow my steps. It's hard balancing both school & work on top of dealing with oncoming life obstacles. Focus on school if you can, and this scholarship can be that start!

UPDATE from Vicky H.: So I was one of the two people to win the scholarship. It was such a blessing to know our community still cared. They were carrying on the memorable legend, the acts of kindness Ms.Lee would pass on to others. I remember all the stories she told me of all the different kinds of people she had encountered in all her years of being at Lincoln. No matter what they did, what they went through, how many years of jail they experienced... she was always down for conversation and she always showed the positive in everything. I believe this scholarship carries on all the things Ms.Lee believed in. The scholarship helps Oakland youth find the goodness in themselves. Not everyone decides to go to college after high school but this was definitely a push for me. I still to this day, light incense whenever I get the chance to stop by Lincoln. Long live Ms.Lee, she was a beautiful woman with a vibrant soul. I miss you everyday.

2019 UPDATE from Vicky H.: I’m currently still in school. I’ve taken online courses and I personally like them much better! My grades throughout the years have been improving. If I stay proactive with school, I will be able to possibly transfer in 2020. To help my education expenses, I sell desserts via Instagram (@sweetsbyvicky) and business has been really good!

Christina Y. (2014 recipient, Lincoln Square)

The Darlene Lee scholarship continues to allow me to further my education here at UC Davis. Entering my second year, I've had a change of heart in the career of my pursuit and am now studying to become an elementary school teacher. This year, I've been given the opportunity to intern at local elementary schools and work hands on with students of various primary grade levels. This internship has provided me the experience as well as the ever growing passion of my desire to help foster the young minds of future generations.

UPDATE from Christina Y: As I look back at the three wonderful years I've had at UC Davis, I am thankful for the Darlene Lee scholarship for giving me the opportunity to obtain a bachelor's degree. I will be graduating in the spring with a psychology major and an education minor. I have been gaining a lot of experience with children this past year: working at a Montessori preschool and interning at a young infant center. These experiences continue to fuel my passion in education and I can't wait to begin my journey in my pursuit of a teaching credential.

2018 UPDATE from Christina Y: Since graduating UC Davis last June, I've taken a gap year and went abroad in the fall. I interned in child developmental centers in Germany and had the opportunity to work alongside children from military families. It was a very rewarding experience. Not only was I able to further my growth and passion in the educational field, I got the chance to explore places I've only dreamt of seeing. Currently, I am apply to graduate school to get my teaching credential as well as my Master's degree in Education. I greatly appreciate the Darlene Lee scholarship for getting me to this point in my life and allowing me to continue my journey in becoming an educator.

2019 UPDATE from Christina Y: The Darlene Lee Scholarship has guided me since the beginning of my post-secondary education and I will be eternally grateful for what it did for me 4 years ago and what it continues to do for me now. Currently, I am in graduate school pursuing my teaching credential and Master’s degree in Education at UC Davis. I am co-teaching in the Vacaville school district in a 3rd grade classroom. I feel blessed for the opportunities I have been fortunate to experience and am excited for what lies ahead: to return back to the Bay and start full time teaching in my own classroom come next fall!

I'm doing great at UCSB — the weather is always perfect here and everyone is super friendly. Most of my classes are interesting and challenging and I always have something to do. Thanks to the Darlene Lee scholarship I was able to purchase about 2 quarters worth of books, which greatly help in my classes.

I'm doing great! I REALLY love it up here at Humboldt State University, especially the trees (the redwoods are AMAZING). I'm still an Elementary Education major and intend to stay one after having some first-hand experience with a local kindergarten class in my first semester of college. I am currently working at the university's children center with toddlers (ages 1-2). I have also joined HSU women's crew team which has been a life changing experience. It has been a discipline that gets me up early, helps me study, and keeps me physically active. Through crew I have made plenty of friends that I hope to keep for life.

UPDATE from Stacey W. I'm doing great up here at Humboldt. I'm still in Elementary education and now plan to work on a minor in American Sign Language. I'm on track to graduate spring 2018, and am a very dedicated member of Humboldt State University's women's rowing team. Thank you Darlene Lee Scholarship Fund!!

2019 UPDATE from Stacey W: I graduated (class of 2018) with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a minor in ASL/special populations. I am currently enrolled in Humboldt State University’s very rigorous multiple subject credential program (graduate school). I also coach rowing for the team I rowed for for the past 4 years. Everyday I coach in the early morning, intern in a classroom during the day, and then attend lectures in the evening. Last semester I worked with a 3rd grade class and this semester I’m working with a 1st grade class. I’m very excited to be where am right now and feel confident I choose the right path. Hopefully this time next year I will have my own classroom!

I'm currently attending UC Irvine studying Psychology and Social Behavior. I am also currently working on double minoring in Education and Management. These last two years have been a great growing experience for me as a student and person. Attending school so far away from home allowed me to gain new perspectives, new responsibilities, and new friends I'm so thankful to have made. I've always heard that your college years will be the fastest years of your life, but I never truly understood how quickly those years fly by until now. Soon I'll be finishing up Spring Quarter and entering the next school term as a Junior! I'd just like thank all of you who have contributed to this scholarship and thank Darlene Lee for her contribution and inspiration to her community. Your contributions are greatly appreciated!

UPDATE from Anna Y. I’m currently finishing up my last year at UC Irvine as a double major in Psychology and Social Behavior (PSB) and Education Sciences. My time here at UCI has truly flown by fast. In the blink of an eye, I have gone from moving into my first dorm room Freshmen year to being highly involved in my co-ed community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, these last remaining quarters as a Senior. I’ve grown a lot these past four years and I owe it to all the new experiences and people I’ve met in my time here. I owe a lot of my growth to Alpha Phi Omega because through this wonderful organization I was able to find a group of people so dedicated, passionate, and honest about who they are as people and what they strive for in their future endeavors. Their energy and positivity motivated me to accept Executive Board positions such as Fellowship Vice President and Pledge Parent. I know when I graduate and move back home to the Bay Area that I will always have a support group to come back to when I visit Irvine in the future.

I hope future recipients of Darlene Lee’s scholarship will be grateful in the opportunities they have been given to them and hope they will continue to lead their lives full of passion, energy, positivity, and one day give back to become a resource for another person’s future goals.

2019 Life Update!
I graduated UC Irvine the Spring of 2017 and attended the University of Hong Kong for one more semester as a study abroad student later that year. My experience abroad was something I will always cherish, both the good and the bad. I’m grateful to have had the experience to not only learn and live in the city my parents grew up in but also to travel to other various countries during school breaks. I visited Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo), South Korea (Seoul), and China (Macau) all while taking classes at the University of Hong Kong as a foreign exchange student. The initial jetlag and homesickness were things I had to overcome with time. Also, it was just my luck that I arrived two days before Hong Kong was hit with a signal 10 Typhoon - the strongest typhoon level! Facing new and different obstacles in Hong Kong tested my ability to adapt to changing environments and I’m thankful to have had the chance to overcome each one and even offer advice to friends who decided to study abroad after seeing my trip on social media.

2018 was a year of career exploration. I tested out several jobs but something conflicting was always on my mind. The predicament of passion versus paycheck. The goal, as it is for most people, was to have both. That question delved into other questions such as “Should I go to graduate school?”, or “Should I work for a couple more years and build more experience and a bigger network?”. I lot of people my age who are fresh graduates juggle these questions and are often in this “in-between” stage of our careers; trying to root itself into a stable soil. You’re overqualified for half the jobs you apply for and underqualified for the other half. It can be difficult for someone in their early twenties to answer the question “So what do you want to do with your career?”. As of right now my answer to that question is, “I don’t know”. No one knows where they’ll end up ten or even twenty years from now and I certainly don't know and that's okay with me. What I learned the most in 2018 was to slow down and pace myself. College was paced like a sprint across the track field; meeting personal and educational goals along the way to graduation. Post-college is paced more like of a jog in the neighborhood; sometimes you’ll need to avoid construction so you take a detour down another street or sometimes you stop to pet a friendly dog. As corny as it sounds sometimes you really do need to stop and smell the flowers (or pet the puppy). You’ll see your peers or “other joggers” paced faster, slower, or even going at the same pace as you but keep in mind, they’re not going to the same destination you’re going to. You possess different skills and experiences that are no less valuable than another person’s. Put more focus in what you value and have confidence in your abilities despite the pressure to have it all figured out already.

We are already several months into 2019 and I am currently working at a Montessori school as an Assistant Teacher with lower elementary school students. I’m also currently considering plans to teach abroad in Asia and in the midst of saving up and doing more research on programs to see this bucket list item come to fruition within the next 3-4 years.

Megan R. (2013 recipient, Chinese Presbyterian Church of Oakland)

I have been having an amazing time at Seattle University. I will be graduating on time in 2017 with a bachelors of science in criminal justice specializing in forensic science with a chemistry minor. I am still participating in university chamber choir and club rugby and I have also recently gotten a job as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Downtown Seattle YMCA. The Darlene Lee Scholarship has given me an amazing opportunity to pursue my academic goals which I may have not been able to achieve otherwise.

2019 UPDATE from Megan R: Having graduated from Seattle University almost two years ago, I have since had some amazing opportunities. For the past year, I have been living in Seoul, South Korea, teaching English in an after school academy. This has brought new challenges of being immersed in a new culture, but also incredible experiences. I have visited Korean landmarks, experienced Korean culture, and I was able to attend the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. With my work itself, I get to teach amazing and enthusiastic kids so that they can not only understand and express themselves well in English, but hopefully also inspire them and make them excited to learn. I have also helped create and organize some new curriculum that will now be used in our academy. When my contract here ends, I plan on returning to the Bay to begin my career, but until then I plan to get the most out of my time in Asia. It is amazing to look back and see how much my life has changed, and it is thanks to the Darlene Lee scholarship that I was able to pursue my aspirations and get to where I am today.
